Twenty-nine gay men (20 HIV+, 9 HIV-) received daily massages for one month. A subset of 11 of the HIV+ subjects served as a within subject control group (one month with and without massages). Major immune findings for the effects of the month of massage included a significant increase in Natural Killer Cell number, Natural Killer Cell Cytotoxicity, soluble CD8, and the cytotoxic subset of CD8 cells. There were no changes in HIV disease progression markers (CD4, CD4/CD8 ratio, Beta-2 microglobulin, neopterin). Major neuroendocrine findings, measured via 24 hour urines included a significant decrease in cortisol, and nonsignificant trends toward decrease of catecholamines. There were also significant decreases in anxiety and increases in relaxation which were significantly correlated with increases in NK cell number. Thus, there appears to be an increase in cytotoxic capacity associated with massage. Implications for HIV+ men as those with other illnesses, particularly cancer, are discussed.

The Transfusion Safety Study (TSS) is a cooperative investigation of factors that determine the occurrence of and modify the expression of transfusion-transmitted infections. A major component of its data is derived from lymphocyte immunophenotyping using a large panel of monoclonal antibodies and two-color flow cytometric analysis. The multicenter longitudinal character of TSS necessitates a uniformity of instrumentation, reagents, and protocols, as well as an intensive quality control program. The baseline assessment of a cohort of males 10 years of age and over with congenital clotting disorders (CCD) exemplifies the approach and some of the flow cytometry results. A comparison of anti-HIV-1 positive and negative subjects shows that more of the loss of T4+ cells was attributable to a decrease in the T4+4B4+ subset than the T4+2H4+ subset. There was an overall increase in CD8 cells, with a significant increase in the I2+T8+ and Leu7+T8+ cells, but a fall in NKH.1+T8+ cells. Monocytes, MO2+I2+ cells, increased. In CCD patients under the age of 10, both anti-HIV-1 positive and negative, there were absolute elevations in immunocytes, including CD4. There was also a distinctly different distribution of CD4 subsets. The suppressor inducer 부산조건만남 subset, 2H4+T4+, was increased relative to the helper inducer subset, 4B4+T4+, in the younger subjects.

A 30-minute back massage was given daily for a 5-day period to 52 hospitalized depressed and adjustment disorder children and adolescents. Compared with a control group who viewed relaxing videotapes, the massaged subjects were less depressed and anxious 부산콜걸샵 and had lower saliva cortisol levels after the massage. 부산오피 In addition, nurses rated the subjects as being less anxious and more cooperative on the last day of the study, and nighttime sleep increased over this period.
